I should probably admit that I'm addicted to facebook - not like a high schooler, but still addicted. It helps me stay in contact with all my friends who I can't regularly see. I also keep in contact with some of my former students and I was reading a post from a sweet, sweet, super talented girl titled WWOD? What Would Obama Do? I laughed out loud and thought that was hilarious - no disrespect intended for the WWJD crowd...Jesus is King....I'm with ya :-) This particular student was talking about her struggle to fit in at her new university and how she was going to try to start organizing the things that she *wished* her university had rather than just sit around and be bummed about it.
This got me thinking. What would Obama do if he had my job? He certainly wouldn't sit around the condo feeling lonely. I decided to get on the SCBMC (San Carlos/Belmont Mother's Club) email and put up a post for family friendly coffee at my local little cupcakery. (No I didn't put out an email that said "will you be my friend" or a "singles" ad you'd see in the paper...)I have been *wishing* for local friends with kids for some time. *Wishing* for people who can get together during the day when all my single/childfree friends are working. Well today was the day and while the evite had 7 rsvps I was still trying to manage my expectations. Over a two hour period I met 17 moms and most of their babies (some were in day care and their moms were on their way to work). I couldn't have been happier. There were a bunch of us so the conversations stayed somewhat surface level but I'm hopeful that 1 or 2 good friends will come out of this. I gave them all my home-made business cards which all moms need - a quick way to give your info even if your baby is screaming. Did I include my job title? You bet cha, CEO Domestic Affairs. I thought about putting "Undomestic Diva" but it's not as fun.
No more wishing...a lot more organizing.
I was also able to see my friend Heather who I met in jury duty last year. I can't tell you how happy it made my heart to see her and for her to meet Charlie (who fell asleep with her and napped for 45 mins which is a testament to her character).
I came home to find 4 followup emails already from the moms....yay! And... a message from the stroller strides instructor. Yesterday Charlie and I tried out stroller strides to get in a workout in the outdoors. I had been communicating with the instructor about the possibility of teaching some classes - mostly so I could get a free work out and earn some chump change. (the average low-cost class with baby here is $8-$10 x 4 days a week...you do the math... still much better than baby and me yoga at $25/class). Unfortunately Charlie was not having a good morning and cried through a bunch of the class. I was afraid she wouldn't want to continue talk of a teaching job but she just emailed. That's right, she's jocking us Charlie....cause we are THAT cool :-)
