Just got back from voting...

I am so excited about this election - we just got back from voting and I think I won't be able to do anything for the next day and a half while I am glued to the tv and all the major networks to watch the results roll in.

For the first time - the candidate that I supported for President from day 1 (way before the primary) is the democratic candidate and it brings tears to my eyes when I hear him speak. Having a child in the world makes me want a better future (I know that sounds so cliche but it's sooo true) and I know Barack is the man for the job.

Prop 8 is on my mind and in my heart all the time - I truly believe we are in the middle of the civil rights movement of our generation. Regardless of your religious beliefs it is wrong to discriminate against anyone for any reason. All couples should have the right to marry regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation or creed.  It is in my Mimi's lifetime that Jose and I wouldn't have been able to marry because he is Mexican.  The idea  of a domestic partnership is the same as giving black people their own water fountain...here you can drink out of this fountain but not out of the fountain for the white people....you stay over there, you're not good enough.  For those who have been scared with the idea that gay marriage will be taught in your child's school - when were you ever taught about marriage in school? I certainly wasn't in the high quality Dixon public schools.  And if your child was taught about gay marriage - what would be wrong with that? It's YOUR responsibility as a parent to be able to talk to your children about life and the conversations are only going to get more difficult later on so you might as well put on your cowboy boots and get real with yourself and your child. (Yes, I'm still a teacher....conversations at a developmentally appropriate level of course)

Speaking of cowboy boots - I was listening to my favorite country radio station (the wolf 95.7) on the way to pick up a coffee when all these women started calling in saying they weren't voting. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? "I don't have an opinion", "I don't want to mark the wrong answer". WTF?! Basically you couldn't be bothered to open your sample ballot, read it, mark what you think is best and go vote? ARRRRRGGGGGGG

Speaking of...reading the sample ballot and marking your responses ahead of time is key in this election because you know there is a line. You know there is a senior citizen who's not quite sure how to use the computer voting booth and therefore is going to take an hour at one of the four booths available for your preccint. If you have read up prior to the election you probably don't even have to refer to your sample ballot - you just go in, mark your responses and presto - you have fulfilled your civic responsibility and everyone in line behind you is relieved that you have vacated the booth.

I can't wait for the coverage to start pouring in.  I will either be walking on water or heartbroken and moving to Canada.
